Instructor's Pre-season Guide: How to plan a snowboard vacation on Kopaonik before the first snow

Trajko Marinković
Licensed Snowboard Instructor (Ski Association of Serbia - SSS) | Sports Valley, Kopaonik
Every year, as soon as September turns into October and the first crisp autumn air hits the peaks of Pančić and Karaman, my phone starts ringing.
It's always the same story: old students, parents planning winter holidays for their children, and new riders asking:
“Trajko, when is the best time to book lessons and how can we prepare so we don't spend our vacation with muscle soreness and waiting in lines?”
After more than 15 seasons on Kopaonik and over 400 trained participants — from complete beginners to advanced carving riders — I've learned one important rule: a successful snowboarding vacation is secured in October, long before the snow cannons are turned on in December in the Sports Valley.
Here's my personal, honest guide on how to prepare this autumn.
1. Why do I recommend booking lessons as early as October?
People often ask me: “Trajko, isn't October too early? Why don't we wait for the forecast in December?”
Here's the reality of our mountain:
Snowboarding is a sport where group work with too many people rarely yields real results. True progress and safety on the board require 1-on-1 instructor focus.
Because I work exclusively with individual lessons and pairs, my daily capacity is physically limited:
- Morning slot (09:00 – 12:00): This is the golden period of the day. The slopes on Karaman Greben (slope 7) and Sunčana Dolina are freshly groomed, the snow holds perfectly, there's no ice or afternoon moguls, and your legs are rested.
- During peak holiday times (New Year, January breaks, and Sretenje holidays in February), these morning slots get filled already during October.
If you wait to arrive on the mountain in December, you'll most often be left with afternoon slots when the snow softens, the slopes become demanding, and fatigue significantly slows down learning.
2. Physical preparation in autumn: What you can do today
You don't need snow in your backyard to prepare your body. The biggest problem beginners encounter on the first day is not balance, but premature fatigue in the quadriceps and calves.
If you incorporate these three simple habits already in October, your first day on the snow will be a real pleasure:
- Isometric wall squat ("Wall Sit" - 3x 45-60 seconds): Snowboarding requires constantly bent knees. Building thigh endurance prevents that familiar “muscle burn” feeling after just one ride.
- Plank and core stability (abdominal and back muscles): Board control starts from the hips. A strong core keeps the upper body stable and prevents awkward rotations and falls.
- Ankle mobility: Calf stretching helps you naturally and effortlessly lean into the boot tongue without lifting your heel.
3. Equipment: Don't buy a board before you've ridden
I often receive messages from beginners asking which new board to buy before coming to Kopaonik.
My advice is always: Wait.
The choice of board (camber, rocker, flex) and bindings depends on your height, weight, natural stance, and the speed at which you progress.
- What's worth investing money in before the season: Quality base layers (merino wool), waterproof outerwear (minimum 10,000 mm), good thermal snowboard socks (never two pairs of socks at once!) and joint protectors.
- What to rent on Kopaonik: Board, bindings, and boots. For my students, I personally assist with selection at trusted rentals in the Sports Valley — we ensure your boot perfectly holds your heel and adjust binding angles before you step onto the slope.
4. What my "Fall-Free" learning methodology looks like
If your biggest fear is catching an edge and experiencing a painful fall on hard snow — you're not alone. Almost every beginner has that fear.
That's why my entire system of work in the Sports Valley is based on biomechanics and stress-free gradual learning:
- We start on a flat section with balance exercises.
- We learn controlled sliding on heels and toes without catching an edge.
- We move on to linking turns on the gentle Karaman Greben only after you have fully mastered braking.
- Through video ride analysis on the spot on the phone, we watch your movements and immediately correct posture mistakes.
5. Book your slots on time
If you are planning to visit Kopaonik for the upcoming season, don't leave your vacation to chance.
